Tranmere story

Birkenhead-born Alan King came through Tranmere Rovers’ youth system and was his hometown club’s only professional side. After leaving Prenton Park, he moved into non-league football with Ellesmere Port before joining Runcorn.

At Runcorn, King captained the side to the 1975–76 Northern Premier League title, the club’s first since the early 1960s, and helped them reach three FA Trophy semi-finals. He later played for Bangor City and Marine; at Bangor he featured under Colin Hawkins in the Alliance Premier League. King also briefly managed Runcorn after Stan Storton’s departure in 1979.
